When planning a hiking tour on Mount Elgon, it’s important to understand the main fees involved. Generally, the costs fall into two key categories:

  • Park Entrance Fees;

This covers your official permit and legal entry into Mount Elgon National Park.

  • Hiking or Trekking costs;

These fees cater for essentials during your tour, including accommodation/camping fess, tents, sleeping mats, sleeping bags, porters to carry your luggage, a chef, as well as food and water.


 3. Park Entrance Fees and Hiking or Trekking costs for Bushiyi, Sipi, and Piswa trails.


  • Park Entrance Fees for Bushiyi, Sipi, and Piswa trails

When planning to climb Mount Elgon via the Piswa, Sipi, or Bushiyi Trails, you will be required to pay park entrance fees, which vary according to residency status:

  • Foreign Non-Residents: 

    👉 $50 or 185,000 UGX per person, per day

  • Foreign Residents: 

    👉 $40 or 150,000 UGX per person, per day

  • East Africans: 

    👉 $15 or 50,000 UGX per person, per day

These entrance fees include the services of a professional guide provided by the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA). Payments are can be made directly to UWA through their online payment systems, or in person at their offices in Mbale, Budadiri, or Kapkwai. You can also process payments conveniently through your tour operator.


  • Hiking or Trekking costs for Piswa, Sipi & Bushiyi Trails


a). Porter Fees

When climbing Mount Elgon, hiring a porter is both required and highly recommended. While it may feel unfamiliar to some hikers, their support is invaluable. Porters carry your luggage, food, water, camping gear, and other essentials, allowing you to hike freely and fully enjoy the experience without the burden of heavy bags.

The cost of hiring a porter is $12 or 40,000 UGX per day, per porter. There’s no need to worry about arranging this yourself—your booking operator will remind you and handle the process on your behalf.


b). Chef fees

In addition to porters, you will also need a chef to prepare your meals during the hike. Hiring a chef costs $10 or 30,000 UGX per day. Having a dedicated cook ensures that you enjoy well-prepared meals, giving you the energy and comfort needed to complete your Mount Elgon adventure.


c). Camping Gear and Camping Fees


The Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) has provided basic structures at various campsites on Mount Elgon. However, for added safety and comfort, it is recommended to bring your own tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping mat.

If you don’t have your own gear, you can rent equipment through your tour operator at affordable rates.

Camping Gear rental costs are as follows:
  • Tent:

  • Sleeping bag:

Camping in the park fees.

d). Food and water costs

Food is a basic necessity on any trek, and during your Mount Elgon adventure, staying energized with sufficient meals and water is essential. If you’re booking through a tour operator, it’s important to communicate your dietary requirements in advance to ensure your needs are well catered for.

On average, food costs start at around $15 or 50,000 UGX per person, per day. Your tour operator will usually remind you to share your preferences, helping you enjoy a comfortable and nourishing experience throughout the hike.

As Mount Elgon continues to grow as a tourist destination, it’s important to note that the mountain currently does not have specialized rescue teams. While hiking here is generally considered safe and manageable, unexpected challenges can occur. If you fall ill or are unable to continue the trek, your guides and porters will help arrange local rescue services, which come at an additional cost. Beyond this, it is generally recommended to carry some extra money to cater for unforeseen circumstances that may arise during your trip.
